[14 April 2009 00:00 GMT]
We stayed for one week in the Habarana/Polonnaruwa district. The area is rural with agriculture being the main source of labour. Many workers were in the fields collecting the rice crop - a back breaking and damp task in the heat. Other areas are scrub/jungle where people scratch a living doing small labouring jobs.

We attended the Foundation Ceremony today 26th February 2009. The first cut of the foundation was made at 06.26, an auspicioous time. Subsequently the carefully prepared Foundation Stone comprising a hollow concrete brick filled with herbs, spices, a small botle of blessed water and grains of paddy, leaving no void, which was then sealed and laid at 09.56 precicely, facing North, by Ian on behalf of the OIAL committee.
During the foundation ceremony the Buddhist Priests chanted a prayer and all members of the community present joined in.
Following the ceremony the children and the parents gathered together in the Temple Hall to take part in a formal celebration to mark the occassion, followed by refreshments prepared by the parents.

| PLANS HAVE NOW BEEN APPROVED |
[31 January 2009 00:00 GMT] Plans have now been approved for the proposed Montessori School to be located near Hingurakgoda in a rural area.
The villagers are in desperate need for this school which will be utilsed by about 50 children. A site is available and is suitable for the development.
We have obtained three quotes for the work and the contract has been awarded to the builder who is well known to us. Work is to commence in February and should take about 5 months to complete. We Urgently need funds for the fitting out and the provision of play equipment. We will be visiting Sri Lanka in March 2009

[01 February 2007 00:00 GMT]
The work to the little fisherman's house is nearing completion. The roof is tiled and the only outstanding work is the concrete flooring, doors and windows.
The brick kiln is completed and production has started.
Directly opposite the fisherman's house is a part completed property owned by a poor farmer. We have agreed to complete the property with roofing and a concrete floor.
We have agreed to connect the electricity to a house occupied by an elderly lady and her granddaughter. We are currently sponsoring the granddaughter.
We have employed a part time Teacher to teach English to the local children. The English language is very important particularly in obtaining work in the Tourist Industry.
